Daniel Peter Rintoul, 38, has been identified by the B.C. Coroners Service as the person fatally shot at an East Vancouver Canadian Tire store on Thursday. Rintoul was arrested in China after trying to unfurl a banner for the spiritual practice of Falun Gong.

Rintoul repeatedly yelled “Falun Gong Hao” (Falun Gong is good) as he was shoved into a police van. Relatives in Calgary acknowledged that Rintoul was the well-known Falun Gong activist.

Rintoul told the Calgary Herald he was on a quest for answers when someone handed him a Falun Gong pamphlet at a transit station.

Rintoul was photographed in Calgary doing his Falun Dafa routine outdoors at Olympic Plaza on Feb. 6, 2011.

Vancouver police continue to review what happened at the Canadian Tire store last week.

Police converged on the store after a man dressed in a dark green hunting jacket broke into a display case and stole a rifle. An employee was stabbed during the melee. A police officer was also injured and taken to hospital.

 Crime scene

Vancouver police Const. Jason Doucette said Monday both the employee and the police officer remain in stable condition in hospital.

The incident began at 3 p.m. when a large man in camouflage entered the store in a mall near Grandview Highway and Rupert Street, then stabbed a 53-year-old store employee in the back and neck and tried to remove firearms from locked gun cabinets. The 6-1, 380-pound suspect then made his way toward an exit as police were assembling outside.

The suspect then grabbed an 82-year-old man and held him hostage at knifepoint. As he exited the doors to the rooftop parking lot holding his hostage at knifepoint, the responding officers tried to arrest him. The suspect was subsequently shot and died from his injuries.

The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. issued a statement that it had been notified of the shooting, and investigators had been sent to gather evidence and interview witnesses. The office investigates all police-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, to determine if an officer committed an offence.
