I had a nightmare

One morning in August 1999, we met Liu Shuwen, the deputy leader of the former Beijing "Falun Gong" Instruction Center, in an apartment in Eastern District, Beijing. She said, her voice filled with hate: "I was duped by Li Hongzhi's heretical fallacies for so many years. We besieged a TV station and Zhongnaihai, the site of the Central Government. It turned out that there was something going on behind the scenes. I served as a hatchet man for Li Hongzhi. I am so muddled-headed...."

Liu Shuwen, 61, was a senior engineer at an institute under the Ministry of the Aerospace Industry, retiring in 1993. She began to practice "Falun Gong" in 1992.

Like the other practitioners, she just wanted to improve her health by practicing "Falun Gong." She said, "I went to a lecture given by Li Hongzhi in the summer 1992. That was the second "Falun Gong" session given by Li Hongzhi in Beijing. I remember I bought a ticket for 35 yuan. Li Hongzhi got this money. But when he asked us to preach "Falun Gong" to other people he said that we should not collect money."

She continued, "At first, I could not understand what Li Hongzhi said because it was fantastic. Once during a class, Li Hongzhi asked all those who had opened their celestial eyes to raise their hands. I saw some people around me raise their hands. Then I asked some of the people who had raised their hands if they could really see something. They said that they could. When I asked them what they saw, they just shook their heads. To tell the truth, I doubted what Li Hongzhi said at the beginning. But after several classes I thought that the reason I did not understand what he said was that I had not cultivated myself to a level that high."

"From then on, I did not doubt those 'Falun Gong' fallacies, because Li Hongzhi insisted that no one should have any doubt about 'Falun Gong.' No one should question 'Falun Gong'; otherwise it was tantamount to doubting Li Hongzhi himself. I was shackled by Li Hongzhi's fallacies, and finally fell into an abyss."

At the end of 1992, Liu Shuwen practiced "Falun Gong" near Dongzhimen, together with three other "Falun Gong" practitioners, and then they transferred to Ditan Park. Others learned "Falun Gong" from them because they knew that they had personally listened to Li Hongzhi's teaching. One day in 1994, Tang Xuehua, director of the former Beijing "Falun Gong" Instruction Center, told Liu Shuwen that she had been appointed the head of the Eastern District "Falun Gong" Instruction Station.

After Li Hongzhi's book Zhuan Falun was published in 1995, Liu Shuwen organized the other responsible persons of "Falun Gong" instruction sites in Eastern District to study it once every two weeks. Not long after, Tang Xuehua told her that she had been appointed the deputy director of the Beijing "Falun Gong" Instruction Center. So from that time on, Liu Shuwen, on behalf of the Beijing "Falun Gong" Instruction Center, began to organize responsible persons of the "Falun Gong" instruction sub-centers in Eastern District to study the book once fortnightly in a borrowed office in Eastern District.

She said, "I did not expect that Li Hongzhi's fallacies would have fooled so many practitioners." Liu Shuwen keenly regretted her participation in the siege of the Beijing TV Station and Zhongnanhai. She said that Li Hongzhi had told his followers that they were only practicing "Falun Gong" to keep in good health and ascend to Heaven. "He told us to stop all other pursuits and only practice 'Falun Gong.' So as soon as I received the notice to go to the Beijing TV Station and Zhongnanhai for 'negotiations' I did not hesitate."

On May 23, 1998, under the order of a responsible person of the Beijing "Falun Gong" Instruction Center, Liu Shuwen told "Falun Gong" practitioners in each "Falun Gong" instruction station to go to the Beijing TV Station to "promote the spirit of 'Falun Gong' " with their "benevolence." Liu Shuwen went to the TV station twice to negotiate with the TV station representatives.

She said that after this incident Li Hongzhi published an article claiming that the people who had gone to the TV station had achieved fulfillment and, if not, would certainly do so in the future. His purpose in writing that article was to hint that the "Falun Gong" practitioners who had not gone to the Beijing TV Station should learn from those who had gone.

Liu Shuwen said quite emphatically that the "loose management" of "Falun Gong" was only in name. As a matter of fact, she said, "Falun Gong" was well organized. Two or three days before the siege of Zhongnanhai on April 25, 1999, Liu Zhichun, another deputy director of the Beijing "Falun Gong" Instruction Center, asked Liu Shuwen to tell some responsible persons of the "Falun Gong" instruction sub-stations to meet in the borrowed offfice. Li Chang and Wang Zhiwen, who usually did not appear at this kind of meeting, were also present. They said that some "Falun Gong" practitioners in Tianjin had been arrested, and that they were going to Zhongnanhai to appeal to the central leaders for help. Li Chang and Wang Zhiwen demanded that more than 30 responsible persons who were present at the meeting tell the "Falun Gong" practitioners in Beijing to go to Zhongnanhai as soon as possible. Liu Shuwen said, "At that time, I thought only of safeguarding the interests of 'Falun Gong' and Li Hongzhi, so I called the responsible persons of the 'Falun Gong' instruction sub-stations in Eastern District together in a hurry, and passed on the instructions. About three p.m. on April 25, I arrived at Zhongnanhai and left together with the other 'Falun Gong' practitioners after the talks. At that time Li Chang asked me to tell Liu Zhichun that two representatives from each instruction sub-station should be chosen for the dialogue at the Petition Bureau of the State Council in Yongdingmen the next day."

Asked when she began to change her view of "Falun Gong," she gave an honest reply. She said, "To tell the truth, at first I did not wake up to reality when the central authorities determined the nature of the Zhongnanhai case. I only saw clearly the true nature of Li Hongzhi when I watched five TV programs on him and 'Falun Gong' on July 22. Li Hongzhi always says that 'Falun Gong' is not involved in politics. But why did 'Falun Gong' practitioners go to Zhongnanhai, the seat of the Central Government? Wasn't it opposition to the government? It was timely for the central authorities to ban 'Falun Gong.' Otherwise the consequences would have been disastrous. I really experienced a nightmare."
