Zhang Liqin, a woman from Zhangguan village, Songbei District, Harbin City, Heilongjiang Province, died of cerebral hemorrhage induced by high blood pressure at the age of 44. However, the main cause of her death was that she refused to see a doctor or take any medicines after she got ill, because she had been infatuated with the Falun Gong cult, believing in Li Hongzhi's heresies about “dispelling diseases, keeping fit and eliminating karma”.

Zhang Liqin, born in 1962, was the youngest daughter of her family and had been weak since her childhood. She was once diagnosed with congenital hypertension by a doctor, who told her that it might induce cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases and that she had to take medicines for life to prevent the attack of those diseases.

At noon one day in 1998 when summer was turning to autumn, two uninvited guests came to Zhangguan village, claiming that they were Dafa "cultivators" and had come to "promote the Fa". Zhang Liqin inquired curiously, finding out they were practicing Falun Gong and that their Master was Li Hongzhi. According to the two guests, their Master was an extraordinary man who had received the exclusive teaching of Buddhism at the age of 4 and learned the essence of Buddhism and obtained supernatural powers at the age of 8; besides, their Master called himself the "Main Buddha of the universe" and had saved the earth about to explode from catastrophe. The guests also said the Falun Gong practice was free of charge and could help practitioners eliminate karma, dispel illness, improve health and achieve consummation.

Seeing the confused and curious expression on the face of Zhang Liqin, who was thin and weak, they said to her, "Falun Gong is easy to learn and can heal your illness without injections and medicines." Tempted by such words, Zhang Liqin gradually fell into the trap of the Falun Gong cult. After practicing for some time, Zhang Liqin felt as if she had improved both her health and appetite, more relaxed physically than before. As she believed that Falun Gong might be able to cure her illnesses, she got trapped deeper and deeper into the cult.

Little by little, Zhang Liqin became convinced of Li Hongzhi's heresies such as “The ailments and travails that people experience result from their karma, and karma is the product of past wrongdoings,” “To end their ordeals you have to eliminate their karma,” “The only way for someone to be healed, to be free of adversity, and to be unburdened of karma, is to engage in spiritual practice and return, pure as he once was, to his true home." Thus in Zhang Liqin’s mind, she was not ill at all, except that she had accumulated too much bad karma, so only by practicing hard to get rid of karma more quickly could she cure her illness without taking medicines, return to her true self and achieve spiritual perfection. Zhang Liqin considered her lucky to have found the magic practice, and she secretly threw away all the medicines her husband had bought for her, with her mind completely focused on studying the Fa and practicing Gong.

When Zhang Liqin further studied the Fa and practiced Gong, her husband found something went wrong with her. At first, Zhang's health improved somewhat, so her husband didn’t object to her practice, but she gradually became inconceivable. As the pillar of the family, her husband not only worked in the field but also did some small business of selling vegetables in the market. He was eager for a hot meal after a hard day's work, but her wife was busy practicing Falun Gong every day, neither cooking meals or doing housework nor caring about their child’s schooling, so their child’s academic performance continuously declined. Zhang Liqin’s husband advised her to practice for some time instead of a whole day, so as not to interfere with the more important things in their daily life. However, Zhang Liqin either paid lip service to her husband’s advice or kept silent without saying a word. And then, she still went her own way rather than follow her husband’s advice.

One day, Zhang Liqin’s husband couldn’t help muttering a few words as he found no meals were prepared after he came back home from a day’s hard work outside. Zhang Liqin said thoughtlessly, "To tell you the truth, I don't practice for curing my diseases but for returning to my original true self and achieve consummation. Master says that we will soon attain consummation. You don’t have to give me any advice. In the six paths of transmigration, it’s all up in the air as to who is whose wife, who is whose husband, or who is whose parent. Master wants us to let go of fame, material interest and emotion to achieve consummation."

Listening to this unheard-of stuff and nonsense, Zhang Liqin’s husband was suddenly unable to find anything to say. He couldn't believe those words came from the mouth of his gentle wife with little schooling; nor could he understand, why so many years of love between wife, husband and child was going to vanish into the thin air just because of some casual words like “consummation”? Looking at his completely changed wife and their once warm and sweet home, the simple and honest husband almost went mad. He had no choice but to ask his relatives and friends to persuade his wife Zhang Liqin to stop practicing the harmful Falun Gong. But Zhang Liqin, turning a deaf ear to their advice, continued her meditation with her head looking down.

Zhang Liqin’s husband had no choice but to bustle around both at home and outside, taking care of the daily life of his wife and his son while going out to work every day. The most pitiable is their clever and sensible son, who studied at a middle school with excellent performance and used to be the apple of his mother’s eye. Since practicing Falun Gong, Zhang Liqin became indifferent to her son, never caring about his life and study. Even if her son begged her to stop practicing, she stuck to her guns cold-heartedly, either going out to visit fellow practitioners or staying at home to meditate alone. In such a family environment, her son's academic performance quickly declined.

On July 22, 1999, Falun Gong was outlawed by China. Zhang Liqin couldn’t understand it, and instead of listening to her husband’s petitions, she persisted in her wrong course, with a deep belief in “eliminating karma” and “attaining consummation”.

A few years later, the symptoms of hypertension and syndrome response slowly became unbearable for Zhang Liqin due to her long-term refusal of medical treatment. She looked pale and often felt dizzy, unable to stand stably. Her husband, relatives and friends advised her to take medicines or go to the hospital, but Zhang Liqin refused, insisting that her condition was attributed to her still existing bad karma which indicated Master was testing her mind. It seemed to her that as long as she persisted in cultivation, Master would surely manifest his “Law Body (Fashen)” to help her purify the body, eliminate karma, overcome difficulties, and achieve consummation.

On July 19, 2006, an unusually muggy day, Zhang Liqin suddenly fell to the ground with hair disheveled while she was practicing Falun Gong. When her husband found her, her body felt as soft as a wad of cotton, her eyes looking blank, and her throat making a snore-like sound. It was too late for treatment by the time she was sent to the hospital. Zhang Liqin finally died of severe cerebral hemorrhage induced by high blood pressure, becoming one more victim of Li Hongzhi and his Falun Gong.

Suffering from extreme grief, Zhang’s husband also passed away soon after.

An otherwise happy family was thus destroyed by Falun Gong, and since then, people in the Zhangguan village dared not practice Falun Gong any more, saying it’s a lethal practice rather than a health-improving exercise.
